Book blurb:

Remembering the dead will always give them life.

The coveted Morrígan’s staff is up for sale on the black market to the highest bidder, and SOA Special Agent Patrick Collins will do whatever it takes to ensure the Dominion Sect doesn’t get their hands on it. Returning the weapon to its rightful owner is another step on the long road toward clearing Patrick’s soul debt, but he won’t walk it alone. Jonothon de Vere won’t let him.

Obeying the gods means Patrick must travel to London. For Jono, it means facing a past he thought he’d left behind forever. His return to England isn’t welcome, and neither is their pack, but Jono and Patrick will face the antagonism together. Politics aside, their priority must be the mission, but the bone-chilling secret they uncover in the London god pack will have far-reaching repercussions no one can ignore.

A race against time takes Patrick and Jono from the streets of London to the bright lights of Paris, where hospitality is thin on the ground, the air is filled with whispered prayers for the missing, and the Morrígan’s staff will end up in the one place it should never have gone—a graveyard.

For beneath Paris lie the long-forgotten dead, and when they rise to walk again, the living can only hope to die.

On the Wings of War is a 109k word m/m urban fantasy with a gay romantic subplot and a HFN ending. It is a direct sequel to A Vigil in the Mourning. Reading the first book in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one.

About On the Wings of War by Hailey Turner: This is an exciting sequel that builds on the series plot and makes readers keep wanting more!

Praise for The Soulbound Series:

Hailey Turner never disappoints! The Soulbound series continues in On The Wings of War with Turner’s unique and compelling world-building, beloved characters including Wade the ever-snacking cutie pie, and the same kind of page-turning action we’ve come to expect from a Hailey Turner story. Whenever I read a Soulbound novel, I come out of it feeling smarter and a little bit breathless, like if I looked behind me there might be a tiny bit of magic and dragon smoke wafting in the air. I can’t recommend this new Hailey Turner novel enough. Grab it now! – Bestselling author, Lucy Lennox

With every new book in the Soulbound series, I ask myself how Hailey Turner could possibly top this, and in true Patrick style, challenge accepted. Each book in this series is even better than the last, and I’m absolutely in love with these characters. I can’t get enough of Patrick, Jono, Wade, and On the Wings of War is an adrenaline-fueled adventure you don’t want to miss! – Bestselling author, Charlie Cochet

Hailey Turner is a wonderful writer, and nowhere is this better illustrated than in the Soulbound series. The world of Patrick and Jono is so perfectly realised and populated with rich characters drawn from mythology and folklore. I couldn’t put this book down. – Bestselling author, Lily Morton

I have been a fan of the Soulbound series since the very beginning, but somehow it gets better with every new installment, and this one is the best yet. The twists and turns are tighter, the action more explosive, the love between Jono and Patrick deeper, and the bonds with their found family even sweeter, making On the Wings of War one of the most satisfying reads I’ve had in a long time. This book was a roller coaster ride I never wanted to end. – M/M Author, May Archer

Excerpt:

Jono frowned at him. “Why are you angry?”

“You shouldn’t come.”

“To London?”

“Yes.”

Jono shook his head. “I’m not letting you go off on your own. I already told you we’re doing this together.”

Patrick finally pulled away, glaring up at Jono. The anger in his scent was strong, but worry cut deeper. Jono wished he could soothe it all way. “The London god pack exiled you.”

“That doesn’t change the fact I’m going with you.”

“You coming with me is a good way to piss them off and get hurt.”

“None of us are safe anywhere. You know that. Stay, go, it doesn’t matter. Someone is always out to get us these days.”

Whether gods, hunters, mercenary magic users, or rival god packs, they had giant targets painted on their backs. If Patrick couldn’t see they were stronger and safer together, Jono would have to argue with him until he did.

“We risk losing too much if we all leave New York. Even with Emma as a secondary and proxy dire, that doesn’t fix the problem of us not being here,” Patrick said flatly.

“I risk everything I care about by letting you fight alone. We tried that with Chicago, and look how things went pear-shaped.”

The strain put on the soulbond by the distance between them had been hard, but being separated was worse. Not knowing what was happening with Patrick had been stressful. Jono didn’t regret the choices he’d made in Patrick’s absence, but he regretted the hurt it had caused the other man. Jono wasn’t willing to go through that again.

Patrick’s mouth twisted, lips going white from the pressure. Jono reached up and pressed his fingers to the seam of them.

“We’re a pack, remember?” Jono said softly. “I’m not leaving you.”

5+ Stars!

On the Wings of War is book 5 in the Soulbound series, which needs to be read in order. So, if you haven’t started yet—and really, why haven’t you? You’re missing out on a fantastic, masterfully-written series—this review might contain spoilers.

I think I say this with every new book, but really, OtWoW is my new favorite, and here are some of the reasons why:

First, neither Patrick or Jono did anything too stupid, which considering the previous installments, it’s quite an improvement, LOL.

Second, Patrick and Jono keep growing closer, and while Patrick still hasn’t said those very important words to Jono, he’s actually thinking on those terms now. Plus, seeing Patrick jealous was great and I loved that Jono was more than willing to prove his devotion to him.

Third, OMG, can Wade be cuter or funnier? I love him in all his thieving/snack-loving glory. *cuddles Wade* I could practically see the heart eyes every single time he interacted with Fatima. He so needs a pet, hahaha.

Fourth, the rest of the pack/team who are kickass awesome, especially Sage, Nadine, and Spencer, since the NY crew wasn’t around as much this time around.

Fifth, the world-building. I don’t know how Hailey Turner does it, but the complex, multi-layered, ongoing arc along with the fantastic ensemble cast is what keeps me coming back for more.

And last but not least, the twist at the end of the book. OMG, I can’t wait to see what will happen after this and how it will impact the story and especially Patrick.

This book didn’t have as much torture as others, IMO—at least Patrick and Jono weren’t put through the wringer quite as much in other books, but knowing Ms. Turner, I’m sure this isn’t going to last, hahaha—but it was just about as action-packed, fast-paced, heart-pounding, angsty, fun, hot, unputdownable and overall, plain awesome read. I just can’t get enough of this series and Patrick, Jono, Wade, and Sage and I’m already looking forward to more.

4.5 Stars!
First off, this series has an overarching plot and is best read in order. That being said, this series is amazing and I highly recommend it. If you haven’t started it yet, go back and start with A Ferry of Bones & Gold first and join us on the journey. I’m going to assume that you have read the other books at this point, but I am still going to try to avoid spoilers as best I can.
I love this series. The world-building that the author has done and continues to add in is amazing. I loved that Patrick is settling more into the pack and his relationship with Jono. His jealousy was startling initially, but fun to see. I loved that Jono was ready to reassure Patrick whenever he needed it. Patrick and Jono had some great swoon-worthy moments in this book. While Patrick still can’t say the words, he says enough to make Jono aware of how he feels. As usual, nothing is as it seems and pack politics, as well as new groups, threaten the world. The things that Patrick and Jono uncover are terrifying and worrisome. I loved that they stuck together and trusted each other through it all. I think that the worst is yet to come, and their love and bond is going to be the thing that gets them through the dark times ahead.
As usual, Wade was a blast and added the humor that helped lighten things up at times. Sage continues to be a spectacular addition to the pack, and I loved how she handles being their pack’s dire. I liked Spencer, and I hope that we see more of him in the future. While I was surprised by the amount of time we saw Hermes in this book, it was nice to see the gods mostly letting Patrick and Jono do what was needed. I can’t wait to read the next book; the ending in this one is going to have some interesting consequences.
