When love is on the line, the only way to move forward is to challenge ghosts of the past and find a place to belong.

High School Teacher Chris, an amputee since his teens, has wrestled with darkness and emerged victorious. He’s a pillar of strength in the classroom, deflecting his overbearing family by day and yearning for love by night. Yet a recent reminder of his fragility at the Lennox ranch has stirred spectres of his past. Enter Noah and his son, Fox, who bring a glimmer of hope into Chris’s life, igniting a fire that dares him to fight for love once more.

After big-city pastry chef Noah inherits his great aunt Lilly’s diner in the small Wyoming town of Whisper Ridge, he can finally escape the painful memories and media fallout of an abusive marriage. He wants to rebuild their lives in a safe place, but starting over isn’t easy when money is running out, the rainbow flag in his window draws the attention of the local fire-and-brimstone pastor, and the past rears its ugly head. Through it all, Noah must decide if he’s ready to open his heart again, especially to his son’s teacher.

Noah and Chris fall in love, stand up for what is right, fight their demons, and find a happy ever after despite the odds.

Excerpt

I inhaled sharply as old memories flooded my thoughts and left me feeling something between the grief of never having come back to Whisper Ridge and a manic happiness at being here now. It was the oddest sensation, and I wondered how much of it was bound up in leaving Briggs and feeling free for the first time in eight years.

“Look!” Fox exclaimed.

I followed his finger, which was pointed toward the back wall, where, in bright neon orange, there was a crudely drawn cock and balls. Vandals had been inside, and I glanced around, searching for more damage, but couldn’t see any. Stools were pushed haphazardly under the counter. The red vinyl seats had small cracks and creases and were more of a sad looking thing than a reminder of the people who’d sat there. On one of them, the stuffing peeked through the cover, and I poked at it with a finger.

“This is so sad,” Fox said with a sigh, pushing open the door to the kitchen. Above the counter, a menu board hung without the descriptions of daily specials, and every corner of the place sat empty of life.

“What am I doing?” I asked the empty space, given Fox had vanished. I was worried for a moment. Then, recalling the layout of the place, knew there wasn’t much space for him to get lost in. There again, were there knives in the kitchen? “Don’t touch anything sharp!” I called out.

“Doh,” Fox replied, his voice dulled by the closed serving pass.

Doh was another word that Fox used a lot, specifically when I asked him to watch out for something, as if I hadn’t had to take him to the emergency room when he’d climbed the tree in the yard.

The teenager handbook, page 5, doh. Page 6, whatever. I had an entire list of things I could add to the book. Talking of lists, I took off one of my gloves and pulled out my phone. Top of the to-do list was to enroll Fox into the local middle/high school in nearby Collier Springs. Next was visiting the bank, third was a lawyer. I scrolled down and added a new line, electric to the diner, then pushed the glove back on before my fingers froze.

Our new home.

Winter Cowboy
4 Stars
This is the first in a series set in the small town of Whisper Ridge but this isn’t your typical light and fluffy small town story. Daniel and Micah do not have an easy path to a HEA. A second-chance romance, there is a lot of past pain and suffering that still impacts the present. On top of that, they both have recent tragedies to deal with. It is a slow burn as they need to unpick their feelings and responsibilities for the past.
You can’t help but feel for Micah; the early part of the book portrays him as the guilty party but as the story unfolds and we get to see the events from other viewpoints, you realise that no situation is black and white. Daniel is carrying a lot of pain and it is clear, he hasn’t dealt with it. His recent trauma has brought it all back and he is unwilling to deal with Micah.
The HEA for these two is well deserved after all they’ve been through. My only slight quibble is that I do wish they’d had more time getting to know each other again once they moved past the past. It felt a little rushed. This however is a minor point in a heartbreaking but ultimately satisfying story.

Summer Drifter
4 Stars
This is book two in the Whisper Ridge story. Although the plot and characters are new, the events of Book 1 frame this story and it works best if read after book 1. It’s an opposite-attracts story. Levi is a drifter; moving around from place to place, training horses. He doesn’t need to have a permanent job but he’s agreed to work for the summer for Micah. Quinn lost his brother in the same cult that Micah’s sister was rescued from. His family is rich and toxic but when he hears that he may have a nephew; he can’t resist going to see him, even if he doesn’t reveal himself.
These two knock each other off their feet (literally and figuratively) but neither are looking to stay. Watching them try to deny what is clear to see is sweet; there’s a real warmth and connection between them. Both so deserve their HEA. There’s less angst than in book 1, it’s lighter but just as emotional.
An enjoyable second installment to the series, well worth the read.

Spring Rains
4.5 Stars
The events of Book 1 and 2 have less impact on this story so it works better as a start than the first two. While the characters overlap; we are told enough of Chris’s past to explain his family’s coddling and his amputation. This book focuses more on the relationship between Noah and Chris; both are bruised from their pasts but there is an attraction, a connection between them. It’s a gentle romance; Chris takes his time to allow Noah the space to let his walls down. He is very protective of his ex-husband’s son, Fox who has certainly been through enough. There’s a little angst, the potential threats of Noah’s ex and also the local Pastor but the core of the story is these two and it’s better for that.
It’s nice to catch up with the characters from previous books. The warmth of the story is the kindness and the support that Noah and Chris are given.
A definite recommendation.

Excerpt

“No… mumble…” he cursed again.

This time, I tugged on his leg to get him out of the cupboard. “Out!”

He unfolded himself from where he’d been lying and propped himself up on his elbows. There was a smudge of paint over his left eyebrow, the same snowy white as the streaks in his steel gray hair. He was only thirty, but like his dad, his dark hair had lightened to salt and pepper when he hit puberty. His gray was as much part of him as his gorgeous eyes, and yes, I stared at him a lot.

When he wasn’t looking of course.

“What were you trying to say in there? Did you find something?”

“No.”

I sighed with relief. “So, what was all the mumbling about?”

“I can’t come over tonight,” he admitted, and couldn’t quite meet my gaze.

“What? Why?”

Wait, could I even ask that question? That wasn’t the kind of thing a boss asks the man who works for him, right? Arlo was under no obligation to spend time with me, but on the weekends when I didn’t have my girls staying, he would always come to my place on a Friday. We’d have beer, and he’d stay over in my spare room after we’d talked until late.

It was our thing.

“Are you okay?” I placed a hand on his knee to let him know I was there for him. He moved his knee, shrugged my touch away, and I wasn’t stupid, there was something off about all of this. “Are you ill? Shit, is something wrong with one of your brothers?”

“No, and no.” Arlo shimmied up, then leaned against the sink cupboard. “It’s just, I have this thing.”

“What thing?”

He stared at me and seemed to be steeling himself to give me bad news, so I sat my ass on the floor and crossed my legs. It couldn’t be too awful because, yes, he seemed distracted, but not completely miserable, so my first guess was it had something to do with his brothers—they were the only reason he’d skip what had become our regular thing. Although, why would any of that affect our standing date-slash-non-date, I didn’t know.

“What thing?” I repeated and poked him to encourage a smile.

He wouldn’t quite meet my gaze, and again, he moved away from my touch. That never happened—Arlo was a big cuddle monster, a soft bear of a man who was tactile and open with his feelings. His heart was so pure, so freaking full of love that sometimes, he couldn’t even contain it and would hug me so hard I couldn’t breathe.

He bit his lip, a typical Arlo habit when he was stressed. This was at odds with him saying everything was okay.

“Ihaveadate,” he blurted in one long run-on sentence, then dipped his gaze, and I swear his face was scarlet.

I slowed down the words to parse their meaning.

I. Have. A. Date.

“You’ve got a what now?” I asked after a pause; not sure I was hearing right.

He cleared his throat and, at last, held my gaze. For a moment, I was lost in watching him tug at his gray hair and seeing the uncertainty and nerves in his intriguing gray eyes. “A date,” he repeated in a softer almost apologetic tone.

Of all the things he could tell me, why was it something that was going to make me spin out?

Since when did Arlo date? He’d told me point-blank that being responsible for his two younger brothers, plus working for me, was enough without contemplating dating. I’d taken that at face value and almost settled into that sweet spot where we could be friends and I could lust from afar, ignoring the unrequited everything I had going on.

The last thing he needed, or should expect, was for me to ask why he was going on a date. Don’t ask. Don’t freaking ask.

“Why?” Shit. I couldn’t help myself.

He shot me one of his affectionate, patient smiles. One of the cute ones that made his eyes sparkle with mischief. Or something.

“Just because…” He sighed. “Sutton left for college, and now… I’m ready to move on. I need to date.” He stared at me.

I tried to read his expression and the determination in his tone. “Date,” I repeated.

A familiar smile teased his lips. “Trace downloaded this app thing, and I swished or swiped or whatever, and then, someone matched me, so I’m meeting this guy called Wilton tonight.” In one sentence, he threw open all my tightly checked emotions and ripped apart my ordered world.

Apparently, he was ready to date.

Date other people.

4 Stars
This is book seven in the series, and to be honest, I’ve read them all but a while ago. That didn’t impact my enjoyment at all, so it really works as a standalone.
This one has two slightly older MCs who are best friends and also in love but neither has had the courage to step up. Jax, because he believes as Arlo’s boss, he’s crossing lines, and Arlo because he can’t bear the idea of risking having Ajax in his life.
It takes the arrival of a child to bring them together. Arlo, be still my beating heart. Is there nothing more swoony than a bear of a man who goes all protective and supportive? He absolutely steps up to be there for Ajax, stands up for him when his family isn’t happy with Ajax’s decisions, and helps him navigate what’s happened. When they open up about their feelings after a surprising kiss, things slot into place. They really are perfect for each other, and they fit.
It’s a short, easy read about two guys who are just so lovely you can’t do anything except root for their HEA—a definite recommendation.

Miracle is the 7th book in the Single Dads series by R.J. Scott. This book has a tie-in with a book in her Shadow Team series in which the third book will be released in 2024. It’s not mandatory for this one, but trust me, you will want to read it.
Jax is an adoptee. He was adopted young by loving parents and has a loving family of other brothers and a sister who are also adopted. He is also obsessed with finding his twin brother he had no idea existed until later in life. He owns his own construction company and is successful. He hires Arlo on the spot and falls in love with him. Arlo lost his parents while he was in college. He has to drop out in order to take care of his younger brothers. He gets a job in Jax’s construction business and falls in love with him. While they tiptoe around each other, finding the courage to confess, Jax comes home and finds a baby on his steps. The baby is his nephew. Together, Jax and Arlo take care of the baby and fall in love with him.
Arlo was such a teddy bear. He was a very relatable character. He was so worried about his little bit of extra weight; all he wanted was for his siblings to be happy. And Jax was super sweet as well. Arlo and Jax were a nice couple, and I kind of wish we saw them do more coupley stuff.
I loved this book. The romance was very sweet, and the drama with Zach kept me on edge. I love how supportive the whole family was and the fact we saw previous characters and how they all tied together. Jax was adorable with his nephew and his girls. I wish we did get more content with Jax and his girls, maybe a couple more phone calls or something. However, this story is shoved into a pretty small timeframe. This was my favourite book of the series so far, despite the fact I seem to have rated them all the exact same. It definitely makes me want to do a reread of the series and maybe start the Shadow Team series.

All Finn needs is to be discreet about his love life until filming is done on the movie that could change his career. But falling in lust, and then love, with Cameron, a sexy hockey star with a perfect smile, shatters his best laid plans.

Actor Finn Kerrigan is at a crossroads. After growing up a soap star, then starring in the hugely successful Rapid trilogy of action movies, he’s finally given the chance to read a heartfelt and passionate script that could change his life forever. The role would be enough for people to see him as a serious actor, and maybe even win him an award or two (and no, a golden raspberry award for Rapid doesn’t count). Once established as a serious actor he’s sure he can come out of the closet and finally live his truth. When he lies to get the part of a hockey player on a struggling team, he suddenly has nowhere to hide. He might be Canadian, but the last time he skated he was ten, and no, he doesn’t have hockey in his blood. With only a month until filming starts, he about to be exposed, but partnered with a player who’s supposed to be giving him tips, he doesn’t realize how many of his secrets will come to light. Falling in lust, one heated kiss at a time, is inevitable, but giving Cameron up at the end of the shoot could break his heart.

Cameron Chavkin is the face of the LA Storm. And the body, and the hair, and the smile. He’s at the prime of his career, men and women want to be with him, and he’s skating better than he ever has before. His house sits next to a famous rock star’s mansion, his garage is filled with expensive cars, and he’s even been asked to mentor a once-famous actor in a new hockey movie. Life is pretty sweet. Until the bad boy of hockey meets Finn, a man on the edge with more secrets than Cameron has endorsements. Knowing better than to get involved, Cameron is swept up despite himself, and when it’s time to say goodbye to the Storm’s most eligible bachelor is finding it hard to follow the script.

When tragedy strikes and team orders are called for, will Archie and Noah’s love survive the fallout?
Noah is devastated when his best friend is badly hurt in a fiery crash, and shocked when the team’s rookie steps up to take Augusto’s place. Not only is Archie inexperienced on the track, but he’s a threat to Noah’s heart when giving in to lust and passion could only end badly. Caught in the chaos of Formula 1, and despite being terrified of losing everything, Noah falls for Archie one passionate but secret moment at a time.
In his rookie F1 season as Deacon-Graaf’s reserve driver, Archie is called up to cover for an injured driver. He’s determined to earn a permanent place in a team, but for now he’s thrilled that he’s driving alongside his idol, Noah. Falling for his teammate is as simple as breathing, but their romance threatens to expose them to a media frenzy, leaving Archie facing a stark choice — love or career.
This M/M romance from RJ Scott features teammates, a secret affair, hurt/comfort, and is set in the high octane world of Formula 1 featuring fast cars, driving at the limit, spectacular crashes, heated rivalries, and of course, a HEA.
Each book in the Lights Out collection is a standalone story, and the books can be read in any order.

A steamy romance between a player and a referee breaks all the rules but will it destroy their careers?

Five different cities in eight years — Logan’s never had the chance to settle in one place. He’s the guy who fills in gaps on teams as a temporary fix and is traded at year’s end because no one wants to keep a thirty-year-old rental after he’s outlived his usefulness. When he’s called up to the Rebels, he knows it’s his last run in the NHL. Now, he must decide if it’s worth carrying on with the weight of his secrets around his neck for one more year. He’s never had a love that mattered, his career is nearly done, his ex-wife is remarrying, his sex life is drier than a desert, and abruptly, Logan’s had enough. He craves one night to ease the frustration, and hooks up with someone tall, dark, and dangerous in the bathroom of a club. The sex is off the charts, but it’s one and done, until Logan realizes exactly who he slept with and understands how dangerous it is to play games with secrets.

Being a referee is in Webber’s blood, and it’s a job he loves. Sure, sometimes he’s called dirty names—by fans, coaches, and players—or must insert himself between two massive men trying to pummel each other. Some nights, he’s knocked on his ass. Other times, he might take a puck to a tender spot. But despite all the hazards and name calling, there is no place he wants to be than on the ice. If only his love life was as settled. It’s hard to find someone willing to put up with his travel schedule, and even if he found Mr. Right, how would he juggle a romance when he’s never home? A chance hookup while officiating a game in Boston should be a simple matter of scratching that itch, but he couldn’t be more wrong. Unfortunately, that one-night stand—while memorable—turns his sedate life upside down in ways he could’ve never foreseen. When the penalty for love is losing everything he’s worked hard for, is it a price he’s willing to pay?

Blurb:
Hiring a fake boyfriend for a school reunion seems to be the only solution, but love was never part of the equation.
Felix has enough on his plate looking out for his parents, let alone agreeing to being hired for a date with the friend of a friend. His instant attraction to the scatter-brained scientist has him making impulsive decisions he hopes he won’t regret. But, somehow, he’s agreeing to more dates, and more time with sexy Ethan and his non-stop talking. When stolen wintry kisses turn to love, and Christmas works its magic, Felix knows he’s losing his heart.
The science of chemistry makes more sense to Ethan than connecting with potential boyfriends, and he’s wary of romance. Unsettled by a string of failed hookups, he knows it’s on him when everything goes wrong and he can’t help but wonder what has made him this way. His friend Jared says that Ethan needs to close metaphorical doors on past hurts—whatever that means—and that the school reunion might just be step one. Determined to show himself as confident and happy, he hires Felix to be his date for the night, but a kiss to make up for the one he missed at prom, and abruptly, it’s not the past that is consuming his thoughts.
Now all Felix has to do is show Ethan that it’s okay to love and be loved in return, and that chemistry can lead to a happily ever after.

Family comes first in all things. Whatever the cost.
Ten had always heard the saying, “Out of the mouths of babes,” but he hadn’t expected it to hit home as it had. After a comment from their daughter, Ten and Jared ponder an addition to the family. Moving into the adoption process is nerve-wracking and riddled with anxiety—kind of the way the Railers have been playing as of late. Bringing two young men into their homes and hearts won’t be a smooth ride. But with patience, humor, and love, the bumpy road might just be a little easier to travel.
Expanding their small family was always in the cards, but no one could have foreseen the process clashing with the worst ever start to a Railers season. A string of losses, a vital player missing from the defense, a captain in the emergency room—and winning a single game seems impossible, let alone getting the team to the playoffs. Faced with hard decisions, Jared refuses to take his work home, but it’s difficult when your husband is at the leading edge of the losing streak. His focus fractures when one sibling they’re matched with is frustrated, angry, and has a healthy dose of mistrust.
Jared and Ten’s parenting skills are tested, but they’ll do anything to make a place in their home the perfect gift for two children lost in the system.
