But when I discover Mac’s been keeping huge secrets of his own, I begin to realize how precarious our relationship really is…and now I have to protect my heart at all cost.

Excerpt:
“No more secrets.” Mac dips his head, his lips brushing mine. I think he meant it to be a soft kiss, a promise of sorts, but as with so many things with us, it doesn’t go quite as planned.
Maybe it’s just the physical expression of our overtaxed emotions, but it ignites like a match to gasoline. His mouth slants over mine with bruising pressure, and it reminds me of when we were younger. I used to think Mac and I were most honest with each other when we were touching. It feels that way again now, with his tongue sliding against mine and his hand pushing under my skirt to gently spread my legs. Like our bodies can admit how much we need each other, even if neither of us can say it. Except then he does.
“I need you, Gwen. I need you so fucking much.” And even though he’s already hooked one finger inside my panties to rub my clit, it doesn’t feel like he’s talking about my body or sex. Or not just that.
“I need you too.” I’m not sure he understands me, because he’s pushed two fingers inside of me and my whole being—my voice, my body, my heart—shudders. A certain giddy relief comes with the realization that while we’ve both made stupid choices and acted foolishly a time or two, we can still come together like this. No matter how I tried to convince myself otherwise, it’s never been just sex between us.
Not even that first night. He was twenty-three and I was eighteen and we met in a crowded dance club and had what was for me a wildly uncharacteristic one-night stand in his car. But even then I knew there was something different about him. Something special. And as much as I couldn’t resist him, it scared the hell out of me.
It still does.
